Living in Colorado Mountain Towns
What it's like to live in Colorado Mountain Towns
These four towns are not one area. They sit in four different corners of the state, from Steamboat in the northwest to Durango in the southwest corner. Each one is a real year-round town with its own ski mountain, its own airport options, and its own pace. Pick the one that fits how you will actually use the place.
Winter Park is the close one, about 90 minutes from Denver over Berthoud Pass. Steamboat is a longer haul, around 2 hours 45 minutes, and a bigger town with a long winter tradition. Crested Butte is about 4.5 hours out at the end of the road past Gunnison, with a small historic core and the ski area up the hill in Mount Crested Butte. Durango is the farthest at about 6.5 hours, the largest of the four, and a college and railroad town as much as a ski town.
The tradeoffs are different in each place. Every town here regulates short-term rentals in its own way, from Steamboat's zones to Crested Butte's capped licenses, so rental plans have to be checked town by town. Winter driving, high-country cold, and wildfire risk are real in all four. I live on the Front Range, so for each of these towns I team up with a local agent I trust and stay with you through the whole move.
